Things To Know Before You Join Band

Things to know before you join band

1.Band is a year-round class.

2. Joining the band requires you to pay band fees, buy method books, and provide money for field trips.

3. Band is a performance class. The band also plays Holiday Concerts and music that may be based on hymns or other religious historical pieces, so if you have religious or political constraints that omit you from performing with the band for any reason, we encourage you to choose another elective.

4. Band students are expected to know how to behave here at Burns and when we step off campus as well. Any behavior problems may result in non-participation of field trips.

5. Concerts and performances are mandatory and if the student and or parent is not committed to participating, this will result in being removed from the band program.

6. Students that have not taken band in 6th and 7th grade that wish to do music in the 8th grade have the option of taking the afterschool Guitar Club class. Burns does not offer a beginner 8th grade band class.

7. Transfer Band students must audition in order to be placed in the appropriate band class based on their current skill level. Students who wish to be in the advanced band (our top group) Must be able to play 6 scales and arpeggios (B Flat, E Flat, A Flat, F, C, and the B Flat Chromatic). Percussion Students must be able to play all scales on mallet percussion and also be able to play the following rudiments (Flam, Paradiddle, Flam Tap, Drag, 5 stroke, 9 stroke and 17 stroke rolls). Those who lack these skills, will be placed in a class that will teach them.
